    The Best Cobb Salad

    Ingredients in Keto Cobb Salad

Ingredient laid out to make a keto Cobb salad - lettuce, ham, chicken, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onion, cheese, and dressing.

    Ingredients Notes

    • Romaine lettuce: Romaine lettuce is traditionally used on a Cobb salad, but you can use any lettuce you prefer - iceberg, mixed baby greens, frisée, arugula.
    • Chicken: How to cook chicken for a classic Cobb salad - pan-sear, poach, air fry, saute, roast, instant pot, baked... you name it. Prepare it however you prefer. I like to pan-sear it in butter and then cube it.
    • Ham: I like to use a pre-cooked ham steak as they are easy and delicious. Just make sure that there are no funky added ingredients.
    • Eggs: It wouldn't be the best Cobb salad recipe without hardboiled eggs. Check out my notes below about how to make the perfect hardboiled eggs.
    • Blue cheese crumbles: If you are not a fan of blue cheese, as many are not, you can substitute any cheese you prefer. Some of my favorites are feta, goat cheese, mozzarella, or sharp cheddar cheese.
    • Tomatoes: You can use cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, vine-ripened tomatoes or even Roma tomatoes.

How to Make the Best Cobb Salad Recipe

a large serving platter full of shredded romaine lettuce.

    Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1: On a large serving platter, spread the lettuce out in an even layer.

A Cobb salad with chicken, bacon, ham, olives, red onion, tomatoes, olives, avocado, blue cheese crumbles and eggs.

STEP 2: Arrange the rest of the ingredients in even rows across the top of the lettuce. While the presentation is beautiful on a large platter, this is definitely easy to toss and mix together when served in a bowl.

    Recipe Tips and Variations

    • Make ahead: If you want to make this ahead of time I recommend storing all ingredients separately and then building the salad right before you are ready to serve it.
    • Storage: Store leftover keto Cobb salad undressed in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
    • Salt and pepper: This dish doesn't really need any added salt as the ham and bacon add a nice salty element, but it is delicious topped with a generous amount of cracked black pepper.
    • Chicken: To make this recipe even quicker, you can use shredded rotisserie chicken.
    • Try my Lemon Herb Vinaigrette Recipe: ¾ cup avocado oil, ¼ cup red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 2 cloves garlic, ½ small shallot - minced, 10 fresh basil leaves - chopped, 3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed and chopped, salt and pepper, to taste. Whisk all of the ingredients together in a bowl, or put them in jar, cap and shake to emulsify.
    • The best way to hard boil eggs: Place the eggs in a large sauce pan with cold water.  Add enough water that the eggs are fully submerged. Over high heat bring water to a rolling boil.  Once the water is boiling, remove the pan from the heat, cover and let sit for 12 minutes. Run each egg under cold water and peel immediately. (More low carb recipes using hardboiled eggs)
    • Cobb salad dressing: Traditionally a Cobb salad is served with a homemade red wine vinaigrette. I prefer a creamier dressing so I like to serve it with my Dairy Free Homemade Ranch Dressing, Creamy Chive Blue Cheese Dressing, or Avocado Ranch Dressing.
