    Keto Glazed Ham

Ingredients in Sugar Free Glazed Ham

flat lay of all the ingredients to make a keto glazed ham - ham, brown sugar, mustard, molasses, garlic

    Ingredient Notes

    • Bone-in ham: The glaze recipe makes enough to coat an 8 to 10 pound ham. Using a bone-in ham keeps it nice and juicy.
    • Brown sugar erythritol: This is my favorite low carb sweetener substitution for regular brown sugar. It looks, feels, and tastes so close to the real thing. (This is my favorite brand) Another excellent option is golden monk fruit.
    • Butter: If you are looking for a dairy free alternative, butter flavored coconut oil will work well here also.
    • Molasses: If you’re anxious about the sugar in the molasses, you should know that 2 tablespoons contain 30g total carbs, adding 3 grams of carbs per serving. This brings the ham to only 3.8g of carbs per serving. Given that, it is definitely worth the splurge. The molasses adds a depth of flavor to this recipe that pairs so well with the warming spices, butter, garlic, and Dijon mustard.
    • Cinnamon and cloves: The cinnamon and cloves add those warm holiday flavors that you would come to expect in the perfect sugar free ham glaze. You can also add a little nutmeg and ginger if you'd like.
    • Garlic: The garlic in the keto glazed ham recipes adds some savory to balance out all the sweetness. Plus, everything is better with garlic.

How to make Keto Glazed Ham

a full ham, scored on top, in an aluminum baking tray, ready to go into the oven

    Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Trim the rind off the ham, leaving the fat layer in tact. Score the fat in a criss-cross pattern, cutting deeply into the fat, but not through to the flesh beneath. Place the ham into a baking tray and add the water to the bottom.

STEP 2: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

STEP 3: While the ham is in the oven, heat a small saucepan over medium-high heat and add the sweetener, butter, sweetener, molasses, dijon, and spices.

STEP 4: Stir constantly until the sweetener is dissolved. Stir constantly until the sweetener is dissolved and the glaze has thickened.

STEP 5: Increase the oven temperature to 425°F. Brush ⅓ of the glaze over the ham and return to the oven, uncovered for 15 minutes. Brush on another ⅓ of the glaze and return to the oven for 15 more minutes. Brush on the remaining ⅓ of the glaze and cook for a final 15 minutes. After removing the ham for the over the final time, rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you cook a whole ham?

First, you’ll want to remove the rind from the ham so that the fat is exposed. Next, score your ham: just make shallow cuts in a diamond pattern across the fat. Scoring the ham insures that the glaze can soak in and bring the flavor to a deeper level. Then, you’ll bake your ham covered at 350°F for 30 minutes in a baking tray with a bit of water at the bottom.

    Is molasses low carb?

If you’re anxious about the sugar in the molasses, you should know that 2 tablespoons contain 30g total carbs, adding 3 grams of carbs per serving. This brings the ham to only 3.8g of carbs per serving

    Recipe Tips and Variations

    • Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week.
    • Reheating: I recommend reheating this in a pan on the stovetop.
    • Replace the molasses: You can swap the molasses out with sugar free maple syrup
    • Add bourbon: This glaze is delicious with ⅓ cup of bourbon added. It adds a richness and depth of flavor.
    • Make salmon: Serve the glaze on top of a perfectly cooked salmon filet.
    • Use marmalade: Replace the molasses with a sugar-free orange marmalade for a burst of citrus flavor.
    • Use pineapple: Replace the molasses with pineapple juice and throw in some chopped pineapple.

    Serving Suggestions

A sugar glaze doesn’t exactly sound keto friendly, but when you make it with brown sugar erythritol or golden monk fruit sweetener and just a little bit of molasses, it’s completely possible. Really, it’s the perfect keto ham recipe, and it goes beyond thanksgiving. Add this keto glazed ham recipe to your Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Spreads, or enjoy it year round!
