Ingredients in Low Carb French Onion Chicken

Ingredients all laid out in individual bowls to make a skillet French onion chicken recipe

    Ingredients Notes

    • Chicken: For this skillet French onion chicken recipe you can use boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts. It is also delicious made with pork. (More Keto Chicken Recipes)
    • Onion: The key to an extra flavorful sauce is to caramelize the onions. Fully caramelizing onions takes about 30 minutes, but the end result is worth it. They taste incredible. (Try this Caramelized Onion and Bacon Dip Recipe)
    • Worcestershire sauce: If you do not have Worcestershire sauce or do not like the flavor, you could also substitute soy sauce or coconut aminos. Depending on which substitution you make, it may be necessary to adjust the salt levels.
    • Garlic: Fresh is best, but if you do not have any fresh garlic on hand, you can use 3 teaspoons jarred minced garlic, 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder, or 1 tablespoon of dried minced garlic.
    • Thyme: Again, fresh is best when it comes to this low carb French onion chicken recipe, but dried will work also. As a rule of thumb, 1 teaspoon of dried herbs is equal to 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs.
    • Beef stock: For this recipe you can use either beef stock or chicken stock. Both will work just fine.
    • Cheese: I used shredded mozzarella and gruyere, but you can use any cheese you prefer. Some of my other favorites are Swiss, gouda, cheddar, or provolone.

How to Make The Best French Onion Chicken Recipe

Step by step photos for how to make a French onion chicken skillet recipe.

    Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1: Lightly season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides.

2: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, add 2 tablespoons of the butter, the onions and the garlic. Cook until the onions are nice and caramelized, about 30 minutes. Remove the onions from the pan and set aside.

3: Increase the heat to medium-high, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and pan-sear the chicken on both sides until they are a deep golden brown.

4: Remove from pan and set aside. (Chicken will not be fully cooking during this stage) De-glaze the pan with stock. Using a rubber spatula, scrape up and mix in any remaining bits of chicken stuck to the bottom of the pan. Let simmer for 3 to 5 minutes.

5: Reduce the heat to medium-low to low, add the cooking sherry, garlic, Worcestershire, thyme, salt and pepper. Let simmer for 6 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced by half and thickened slightly.

6: Add caramelized onions back to the pan and nestle in the chicken, and simmer until the chicken is cooked all the way through, about 10 minutes or until it has reached an internal temperature of 165°F.

7: Spoon the onions and some sauce over the chicken and then top with a combination of gruyere and mozzarella cheese. Bake in the oven for 7 to 8 mins at 275°F or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

8: Spoon a little bit of onion gravy on top and garnish with fresh thyme.

    Recipe Tips and Variations

    • Storage: Store leftover Keto French Onion Chicken in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
    • Reheating: You can reheat this dish in a pan on the stovetop or in the microwave.
    • Thickening the sauce: If you would like the sauce to be thicker, you can add a little xanthan gum, tapioca flour or arrowroot flour.
    • Slow cooker: To make this recipe in a crockpot, add all ingredients except for the cheese and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours. Sprinkle the cheese over top and cook for one additional hour.
    • Serving suggestions: I like to serve this with Herbed Goat Cheese Cauliflower Mash and Sheet Pan Roasted Broccoli or Cheesy Garlic Roasted Asparagus

Kyndra you did it again. I modified the recipe slightly as I am not currently Keto and did not need that much fat. Even in doing so, it was a slam dunk! The cooking time on the chicken was perfect. The caramelized onions and sauce was delicious! I served it with steamed broccoli and some toasted sourdough sprinkled with Gruyère (to soak up all the delicious sauce). Will def make again! 10 out of 10!

Made this tonight for my parents and hubs while on vacation at the cottage together. Everyone was blown away! Used chicken thighs (6) and subbed provolone for the Gruyère as it was an asinine price at the grocery store here.
Mom asked for a copy of the recipe!!

Sorry, for some reason my recipe says "chicken stuck." I was thinking extra chicken bits stuck on bottom of pan. Too funny, thanx for your help. Making it tonight. It looks delicious.

This dish is SO GOOD!! I did it in cast iron so I wouldn't have to switch pans and used chicken thighs. I can't wait to make this for my keto sister next time I go visit!

I'm so excited to try this out this weekend!

I had a question about doing it in a slow cooker. In the instructions it says for everything except the cheese to cook on low for 4-6 hours, then to add the cheese and cook for an additional hour. I just wanted to check and make sure that meant a total of 5-7 hours cooking time, not that the cheese should be added in the final hour of that 4-6 hour window.

Thanks so much! I have a feeling this is going to be a household favorite!

Hi Jordan, you would add the check and then cook for one additional hour.
